Ranger — Class Guide

By LongBeam·Published

Other languages

The Ranger is Scars of Honor's mobile ranged class — a fragile kiter that trades survivability for precision, traps, and gadgets. Sourcing for this class is thin: most of what we know comes from a single playtest stream where the abilities were read aloud from tooltips, plus an older official overview, so treat everything below as early-build behavior that is likely to change.

Early-playtest caveat. Scars of Honor is an early playtest/alpha (2026). Exact numbers, ability names, talents, and even whole systems are being balanced and may change between builds. In the playtest footage this guide draws from, the player described it as feeling "very alpha," noted that several talents "weren't really working," and even the talent keybinds were bugged ("you can't do the key binds for them"). Read the specifics as a snapshot, not as settled design.

Core feel

The Ranger has no auto attack. Instead you have a basic ranged attack you tap manually — in the playtest the player was told to "press the one button three times," and confirmed "there's no built-in auto attack," which the streamers liked for adding more APM to the moment-to-moment play. You spam one main attack and layer abilities on top of it.

It plays as a highly mobile kiting class. The player repeatedly leaned on movement and slows to stay alive ("I'm so fast with it"), and in a duel kited and rooted a melee opponent rather than standing and trading. The flip side is fragility: against a melee target who closes the gap, the Ranger is in trouble, so distance and control are the whole game.

The three paths

The community database Scarshead lists three Ranger playstyles/paths. These are the broad role buckets; the playtest footage shows abilities that fit each one.

Sharpshooter — single-target burst

The precision/burst path, built around big single hits. In the playtest the player built toward a "Dead Eye" talent for a large single-target shot, paired with a Charged Shot — "charge a powerful shot that deals increased damage the longer it's charged." Note that the numbers shown were unreliable in that build (a Dead Eye hit for only 75, which the player flagged as suspiciously low and likely a gear or bug issue). The vendor tier list at LagoFast rates Sharpshooter as A-tier, but that is one writer's early, speculative opinion and not authoritative.

Trapper — control and crowd control

The CC path. The playtest showed a Spiked Bola (the player assumed it was a root: "this is a spiked bola, I'm assuming like root"), and a duel opponent layered multiple traps ("I got three traps," "watch out for those spikes"). Caltrops "linger on the ground dealing damage and slowing targets by 40% for everyone in the area," and there is a bear traps talent. Several slows are also available, including a Freezing Shot (ice projectile) that deals damage and slows "by 30% stacking up to three times."

Artificer — turrets and gadgets

The deployable/gadget path. The standout is the Sentry turret: "place a stationary sentry at a target location. The sentry automatically shoots energy bolts dealing damage at enemies in a 20-meter radius. The sentry is destroyed after 15 seconds." The footage also showed Sentinel Volley (reached via "Piercing Marksmanship"), which "spawns mystical archers unleashing a volley of arrows in a wide cone."

Abilities and talents seen in the playtest

These are read directly from in-game tooltips in the playtest stream. Numbers and names are alpha-build values and may change.

  • Charged Shot / Dead Eye — a big single hit; Charged Shot "deals increased damage the longer it's charged." Dead Eye was the burst payoff the player specced toward.
  • Freezing Shot — "shoots an ice fuse projectile at the target dealing damage, slowing them by 30%, stacking up to three times."
  • Electric/lightning projectile — "continuously shoot a fast moving electric projectile at a target dealing lightning damage." Described as the player's spam attack.
  • Spiked Bola — a thrown control tool; the player read it as a root.
  • Caltrops — "linger on the ground dealing damage and slowing targets by 40% for everyone in the area."
  • Sentry — a stationary turret that auto-fires energy bolts in a 20-meter radius, destroyed after 15 seconds.
  • Sentinel Volley (via Piercing Marksmanship) — "spawns mystical archers unleashing a volley of arrows in a wide cone."
  • Bear traps — a trap talent (seen on the tree, no tooltip read).

Passive/buff talents seen:

  • +10% ranged damage — "increase damage to all ranged attacks by 10%."
  • Dead Eye node — "increase all damage with ranged attacks; increase your dexterity by 5."
  • Enhancing Dust — "launch an arrow in the sky that leaves enhancing dust behind, empowering the caster for a duration." Enhancing Dust "provides 30% move speed and 10% dexterity or critical strike chance."
  • Anti-healing on Electric Discharge — an anti-healing debuff that makes the target take "40% less healing."

Note on older terminology

The official "Mastering the Basics" overview is older and uses different names for some of these tools. There the Ranger's signature is the charged shot (described as greatly increasing arrow damage and crit chance), plus smoke bombs that "disorient enemies," traps that "incapacitate them," and a movement/damage buff called Hunter's Ash ("further buff your character including movement speed and attack damage"). Charged Shot and traps still appear in the later playtest, but "smoke bombs" and "Hunter's Ash" were not seen by those names in the playtest footage — treat the official video's terminology as potentially outdated.

Featured build

This is a real community Ranger build you can open and adjust in our planner — a Sharpshooter-style single-target burst tree (the "Cooking 1 SHOT" build), credited to oODovaOo (via ScarsHQ). ScarsHQ's own builds listing flags it as a 70-point Ranger build, and the site's tier-list disclaimer is worth repeating: it is "way too early for a real tier list."

Practical tips

  • Keep your distance. The Ranger is fragile in melee. Lead with slows (Freezing Shot, Caltrops) and a root (Spiked Bola) to keep targets off you, then kite while you fire.
  • Stack your slows. Freezing Shot stacks its 30% slow up to three times — open with it to lock movement before committing to burst.
  • Use Enhancing Dust to reposition. The +30% move speed (and +10% dexterity or crit) is strong both for kiting and for getting into a clean firing line.
  • Place turrets ahead of fights. A Sentry only lasts 15 seconds, so drop it as you engage rather than pre-placing it too early.
  • Don't trust the numbers yet. Damage values in the playtest were inconsistent (a Dead Eye hit for 75 looked bugged or gear-limited), and gear/stat setup matters — match high-dexterity equipment to the Ranger, as the beginner sources recommend.
